Action! Film and TV Summer Workshop for Kids
ACTION! is a free, two-week summer workshop hosted by Campbell Hall that brings together 40 rising 5th and 6th graders, 20 from Campbell Hall and 20 from LA’s BEST. Through the creation of film and television productions, students have an avenue to tell stories about themselves and the worlds in their imaginations.
ACTION! participants learn the art of filmmaking and TV production from writing scripts, pitching ideas, shooting, editing, and acting, and special effects. In addition to cameras, Campbell Hall outfits students with iPads that they are able to use on campus as well as take home for the duration of the program and create documentaries based on their own narratives. They are also given access to Campbell Hall’s newly built TV studio, complete with a green screen, professional cameras, lighting, and sound equipment. As students build technical skills, they learn the craft of storytelling as well as forge strong friendships through the creative process. Each student achieves a genuine sense of accomplishment as they see projects through to their completion. From the idea phase to filming and editing, students work both in teams on a group project as well as individually on their own narratives. The program culminates with a viewing party where friends, family, and peers gather to watch and celebrate the films of the entire class. Participants are also given a copy of the projects to take home.
