Third Grade Visits the Wishtoyo Chumash Village

Third grade visited the Wishtoyo Chumash Village on May 18th. The Wishtoyo Chumash Village is an 8,000 year old ancestral village.
Students were greeted by a tribal circle with a sacred fire, where an Indigenous Chief addressed the students about conserving and honoring the land. Students were led on a nature walk and talk, where they learned about the medicinal qualities of plants. They also participated in a presentation on recycling and preserving marine land, while learning about the damage waste has on the ocean. This was an introduction to our Native American/Indigenous Peoples unit, where we will teach our students about Native Americans today, and their continuing contributions to our everyday lives.
