  • (Grades 9-12) Calculus

This course is designed for students wishing to learn the basic principles of calculus and typically covers a one-semester college course. The course includes theory and evaluation techniques of limits, derivatives, and integrals involving algebraic, trigonometric, logarithmic, and exponential functions. Students apply these tools to solve problems such as local linearization, related rates, optimization, and analysis of graphs of functions. Students develop their problem-solving skills and ability to generate clear, precise mathematical arguments. Students are expected to communicate their mathematical thinking through numeric, graphic, and analytic avenues. Graphing calculators, calculator-based applications, and computer software are used to illustrate and enhance topics covered throughout the year. (Elective course.)

Prerequisite: B or higher in Precalculus with Trigonometry, or A- or higher in Fundamentals of Precalculus, or placement test).

Dates: June 30–July 25 (No class on Friday, July 4)
    Hours: 1 – 4 pm
    Price: $2,075.00
Led by: Campbell Hall High School Mathematics teacher David Riddell
  • (Grades 9-12) Geometry

Geometry is designed to prepare students in the investigation, understanding, and application of plane geometry. Course topics include basic theorems and postulates of parallel lines, congruent triangles, quadrilaterals, similarity, circles, polygon area, right triangle applications, and volume and surface area of solids. Students are also introduced to basic trigonometry concepts (sine, cosine, and tangent). Throughout the year, students incorporate the writing of basic two-column proofs to further explore geometric concepts and analytical thinking. This course is designed for students using a visual approach to the topics in geometry. This course also provides opportunities for additional review in the basic concepts of Algebra I. *Campbell Hall Summer Class attendance policy applies to this course.

Dates: June 23–July 25 (No class Friday, July 4)
    Time: 8:30 am – 12:00 pm
    Price: $2,075.00

  • (Grades 9-12) Pre-Calculus/Trigonometry

This course is designed to integrate the subject matter of trigonometry and third-year algebra. A unified approach to pre-calculus covers the major topics of advanced algebra, including higher-order polynomials, advanced graphic techniques, inequalities, exponential and logarithmic functions, matrix and vector analysis, polar coordinates, and complex numbers. Topics of trigonometry will include trigonometric functions and their inverses, graphs of these functions, trigonometric identities and equations, and applications of trigonometry. In addition, students will learn basic probability and statistics. This course includes the use of a graphing calculator and appropriate computer programs and provides a background for students planning college courses requiring trigonometry and pre-calculus.

Campbell Hall students will qualify for AP Calculus AB with a grade of A- or above in Pre-Calc/Trig. *Campbell Hall Summer Class attendance policy applies to this course.

Dates: June 23–July 25 (No class Friday, July 4)
    Time: 8:30 am – 12:00 pm

  • College Application Summer Intensive (for rising seniors)

The Campbell Hall College Application Summer Intensive (CASI) offers a complete approach to building a college application. The small student/faculty-counselor ratio enhances the effectiveness and intimacy of our program. Each day the students will draft their essays and writing supplements with an English teacher for two hours, and will work with his/her college counselor for another two hours.  Guest speakers during the week include a college admissions officer and CH alumni who attended CASI.  Students will also meet individually with college counselors and teachers throughout the week. The counselors will direct the students through more in-depth college research and application work while refining their list of colleges to which they are applying; help students understand how to complete each part of the Common Application, as well as the UC application and will review their progress; and teach students about important details surrounding the general college process as well as the internal steps required at CH. Students will make substantial progress on the completion of their applications and essays.

This five-day program is most appropriate for seniors who are applying to private and/or public colleges or universities (especially students who plan to apply Early Decision and/or Early Action) using the Common Application. We will briefly address the UC and CSU applications and the process that they use. Early registration is strongly encouraged, as the program fills up every year. Students register with their personal college counselor.  We will have a waitlist. We have made a concerted effort to schedule CASI so as not to conflict with other Campbell Hall summer activities, but please check the dates before signing up, as daily attendance is mandatory. A confirmation email will be sent from College Counseling to registered students in mid-June. (NOTE: Space is limited.)

    CASI Dates: August 6, 8, 11, 13, 15
    CASI Time: 10 am – 2 pm
    CASI Price: $900.00
