Our Unwavering Commitment to Inclusion

At Campbell Hall, our commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice (DEIJ) calls us to reflect deeply on moments that challenge our collective conscience. Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde’s powerful words at the National Cathedral, calling for mercy and justice for the most vulnerable among us, resonate deeply with our school’s Episcopal identity and our mission to foster a community where all are safe, seen, and supported.

Her appeal for dignity and compassion—particularly for immigrants, LGBTQ+ youth, and others who often live in fear—is a reminder that justice is not a passive ideal but an active responsibility. It challenges us to reflect on how we, as individuals and as a community, can better serve those who are marginalized, ensuring that our values are reflected in our actions. We insist that these are pastoral issues rather than political debates.

For decades, Campbell Hall has been a leader in fostering spaces of connection, belonging, and advocacy. From our founding role in the Independent School Alliance for Minority Affairs (1984) to launching affinity groups for families and students (1996), we have built a foundation that honors diversity and gender inclusivity. Our work includes bold steps like adopting our Diversity Mission Statement (2004) and Antiracism Commitment (2019) and creating the DEIJ Committee (2020).

Today, Bishop Budde’s message reinforces our ongoing dedication to this work. Through initiatives like the Anti-Bias Curriculum Lab, student affinity groups, partnerships with organizations like TeachAAPI and Private School Village (PSV), and professional development programs for faculty and staff like Campbell Hall’s own Inclusion Institute, we strive to model the compassion, dignity, and justice she calls us to embody. At the same time, as a community of inquiry, Campbell Hall promotes open and unbiased dialogue on all issues of public policy, science, history, and other subjects. We are not promoting a political point of view; rather, we insist on the primacy of love in all important human questions, and the primacy of a connection to the divine for true justice to be served.

Our mission is clear: to listen, learn, and act, ensuring Campbell Hall is a space of academic excellence and a sanctuary of respect and hope for all community members. Let us continue to embrace this call to courage and kindness as we build a more just and equitable world.

Faithfully,
