Once a Viking, Always a Viking
Stuart Posin ’96
When Stuart Posin ’96 first joined Campbell Hall as a 7th grader, he was following in the footsteps of his older brother, David Posin ’93. It wouldn’t be long, however, before he forged his own path at the school that would be such an important part of his life.
Stuart was an active member of the student body; he played football and basketball, was involved in the technical theater program, and served as co-editor-in-chief of The Piper in his junior and senior years. He loved the experiential education trips, even the Colorado River rafting trip in which he and classmate Pia Rosner ’96 had to madly paddle their canoe against wind and rain to make it back to the campsite, only to set up their tents in the mud.
It was playing football, however, that really helped him through his teenage years because, as he noted, “My teammates and Coaches Jensen and Morenz gave me confidence in a way I had never experienced before and that changed my life.”
The caring teachers, staff and administrators created a nurturing environment that Stuart describes as “a home away from home.” For instance, when he and another classmate, Sara Atchity-Billings ’96, were the only two juniors who seemed to have 6th period free, the pair would often sit in the high school office with the administrative assistants, Susie Wilson and Lori Jones. Despite their own workload, Susie and Lori always made time for the high school students. “They didn’t have to do that,” said Stuart. “This type of kindness is emblematic of Campbell Hall.”
After his AP Physics exam his senior year, Stuart found himself hanging out in Mario Santonastaso’s office. “Mr. S.” was in the midst of transitioning from science teacher to Director of Technology and Stuart asked if he needed any help during the summer. He soon found himself gainfully employed in the Campbell Hall Technology Department for the next four summers. After Stuart graduated from UC Irvine with a degree in Economics, he went to work full-time at Campbell Hall as the Assistant Director of Technology and also taught AP Computer Science. “It was a weird transition to start calling my former teachers by their first names,” laughed Stuart. He later went on to become Director of Technology at other local independent schools including Buckley and Marlborough. He has also served as Chief Technology Officer at several organizations including his current role as CTO at XClaim, a company that is innovating the bankruptcy industry.
When Stuart left Campbell Hall as an employee, he joined the Alumni Board and later served as its President. He was the first Alumni Board President to also sit on the Board of the Directors. Stuart has devoted his time not just to improving the lives of Campbell Hall students, but also helping a number of other educational institutions as well. He was a founding board member of One Schoolhouse (formerly Online School for Girls), is the co-founder and board member of ATLIS (Association of Technology Leaders in Independent Schools), and also serves as the Chair of the Board at Providence High School in Burbank.
“One of the things I learned at Campbell Hall and which I did not truly appreciate until later in life, was to truly be myself,” said Stuart. In all of his stories about Campbell Hall, what stands out most is how grateful Stuart is for his school experiences, the lifelong friendships he made, the career he started and built, and even for his marriage to the love of his life, Kim, that can be traced back to his classmate Tim Nollan ’96 who first introduced the couple. (Fun fact: The Rev. Canon Tom G. Clarke, Campbell Hall’s second Head of School, officiated at their wedding). Stuart now has two beautiful children, Noah, and Brooklyn, with his wife Kim.
Stuart is passionate about ensuring the longevity of Campbell Hall. He has been a donor to the school since he graduated from high school, giving consecutively for 25 years. “I love the school dearly. I loved the relationships I had with the employees,” Stuart said. “The opportunity to attend Campbell Hall was a privilege and it gave me the mindset to give back to make the world a better place. People gave to Campbell Hall before me and it’s my responsibility to give back for future generations.”
